India, the biggest whiskey market in the world, has awarded legal protection or ‘geographic indication status’, meaning only whiskey produced on the Island of Ireland can brand themselves with the ‘Irish Whiskey’ label when selling in India.
India has a massive thirst for whiskey, with 2.3 billion bottles of the spirit sold there last year, making it the biggest whiskey market in the world.
This is great news for Irish Whiskey Brands as it will give them some brand protection and to be able to challenge the fake Irish Whiskey products on sale in India.
